Walter R. Wollman was born Saturday, July 23, 1927 in Menno, South Dakota to Karl and Lydia (Tedeyske) Wollman. He was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Menno. He grew up and graduated from Menno High School in 1945. He entered the U.S. Army in 1945 and was honorably discharged in 1947 after serving in the Philippines during WWII. Walter then worked for Reese Elevators in Menno for nineteen years. He married Delores Mettler on June 5, 1949 in Menno. In 1966, the family moved to Tripp where he carried mail on RR1 for 40 years. During his time as a mail carrier, he was honored for 1,000,000 miles of mail delivery without an accident. Walter retired December 26, 2003. He was an active member of Emmaus Lutheran Church and held many church offices.
Walter was an avid hunter up until his cancer diagnosis three years ago. He spent many fall afternoons pheasant hunting, early mornings at Lake Andes shooting geese and ducks, as well as walking the draws along the James River or Harding County hunting deer and antelope. Walter died Sunday, March 14, 2010 at the Good Samaritan Center in Tripp, South Dakota with his family at his side, having reached the age of 82 years, 7 months, and 21 days.
Walter is survived by Delores, his wife of 60 years; two sons: Fredrick and his wife Kathy of Valley Center, California and Robert of Bloomington, Minnesota; a daughter, Susanne of St. Louis Park, Minnesota; two grandchildren: Jaime Chris (JC) of Carlsbad, California and Andrew and his fiancé Amber Vickers of Flagstaff, Arizona; two brothers: Harold and his wife Lucille of Frederick, Colorado and Lloyd and his wife Darlene of Pt. Charlotte, Florida; four sisters-in-law: Alma Wollman of Menno, Marge Wollman of Freeman, Dorothea Prouty of Sioux Falls, and Gertie Mettler of Menno; two brothers-in-law, Duane Knittel of Menno and Harvey Mettler and his wife Margit of Saharita, Arizona; and many nieces and nephews.
Awaiting Walter in heaven will be his parents, seven siblings: Eugene and Violet, who both died in infancy, brothers Arnold, Marlin, and Gerhardt, and sisters Gladys Knittel and Adella Aisenbrey.
The family wishes to give a special thanks to the staff of Good Samaritan Center in Tripp for their kindness, compassion and great care they provided Walter and Delores.
