Virginia Laverne Oorlog was born on Tuesday, October 25, 1927 on the family farm near Tripp in Bon Homme County. Her parents were Henry and Beatha (Schelske) Haeffner. She attended country school near Tripp and Tripp High School through her sophomore year. Virginia was united in marriage to Henry G. “Hank” Oorlog on October 25, 1945. The newly constructed Reformed Church in Tripp wasn’t complete at that time, so the wedding took place in the basement of the church. She was a devoted and hard-working farm wife for 30 years. Virginia loved gardening and baking, and will be remembered for her caramel rolls, raised doughnuts and peach kuchen. Every member of the family got a coat sewn just for them by Virginia. After she and Hank moved to Tripp, she worked as a cook at the Tripp School. Later, she worked as a seamstress at Raven Industries in Parkston and was employed there for 20 years. Virginia loved to go fishing and also enjoyed bowling, listening to music, and following Minnesota Twins baseball. She was a member of Danzig Baptist Church. Virginia became a resident of the Tripp Good Samaritan Society on July 5, 2007, and it is there that she passed away on Friday, October 23, 2009, at the age of 81 years, 11 months and 28 days.
Grateful for having shared Virginia’s life are her three children: Chuck (Gloria) Oorlog of South Sioux City, Iowa, Connie (Don) Sonne of Big Stone Lake and Cathy (Glen) Bochman of Springfield; 13 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren; and three sisters: Doris Schneider of Tripp, Mary (Ray) Bouza of Tripp and Diane Horvath of Sioux Falls.
Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, Hank Oorlog, an infant son, David Oorlog, her parents, Henry and Beatha Haeffner, and a brother, Eldon Haeffner.
