Verna Mae Knoll, age 92, formerly of Tyndall, passed away Friday, February 21, 2025 at Sr. James Care Center in Yankton. Per Verna’s wishes, no services will be held.
Verna was born September 28, 1932 to Edward and Rosalie (Heckenlaible) Woehl in Scotland. She grew up and attended school in Scotland. Beginning at a young age, she loved to sing, play accordion and slide guitar. Verna helped on the farm with the horses and the honey bees that her father raised. Her first job was working at Red Owl in Yankton.
Verna married Robert Heckenlively in August of 1953. They were blessed with 2 daughters, Carol Rose and Sheila Lynn. Verna was a stay-at-home mom during the summer, keeping a wonderful home and garden. She worked at various restaurants in Yankton during the winter months.
Verna met and married Peter Knoll. The birth of their daughter, Kimberly Kay, completed the family. They moved to the family farm near Scotland where they raised cattle. Verna worked at local cafes and was a custodian at Scotland High School. She moved to Lidi Apartments in Tyndall in 2007 where she resided until moving to Sr. James Care Center, February 17, 2023.
Verna is survived by 3 loving daughters, Carol Schulte, Sheila Heckenlively and Kim Dingman; 3 grandchildren, Paul Brewer, Sherry (Chris) Rempp and Patrick (Shelly) Brewer; 9 great-grandchildren, Devon, Corwin, Kendra, Gazmyne, Amber, Tyler, Gage, Chase and Marcus; 3 great-great-grandsons, Noah, Zayden and Clyde; sister, Idella Bietz; and extended family, Jeff, Bonnie, Carly and Curtis Knoll.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Rosalie; brother, Raymond (Marie) Woehl; sons-in-law, David Dingman and Dean Schulte; brother-in-law, Ray Bietz, along with Brianna Knoll.
