Vern A. Haase was born on February 25, 1936, in Scotland, South Dakota, to Henry and Lorena Haase—arriving during a snow storm as his father was in the process of moving the family to a new home. He was a 1954 graduate of Scotland High School and took great pride and joy in organizing many of his class reunions.
Following graduation, Vern worked alongside his parents on the family farm, while also installing television antennas which lasted for 30 years. On October 25, 1955, he married Arlene Schaeffer. The couple later settled on the family farm south of Scotland, where Vern operated a small dairy, hog, and crop operation.
Vern was a man of quiet service, a strong work ethic, and always ready to lend a hand. He was a long-time expert crop adjuster and spent over 30 years with the ASCS office as a weed supervisor and a county committeeman. He served on the Scotland Creamery Board for 16 years, the FHA Board, and was on several church boards and offices. He also served on the Ebenezer Cemetery Board which included clearing snow for burials, planting trees, mowing, and installing flag holders in honor of our military veterans.
His many inventions were masterpieces of efficiency. He made things like hands-free gate latches, a removable office in his pickup for crop adjusting, and holders to keep calculators at just the right angle. He enjoyed making everyday tasks easier with his clever tools and gadgets. Using Arlene’s ideas and his own skills, they patented a cake support system that was sold around the world.
Vern enjoyed team bowling, trap shooting, deer hunting, softball, reloading shells, playing cards with family, and delivering quick-witted comebacks—right up to the very end. His sense of humor was sharp, and his teasing was always filled with affection.
Many kids enjoyed his humor and spending time with him having snowball fights, playing ping pong, doing brain teaser puzzles, coin tricks, card games, tractor rides, farm experiences, knuckle crack challenges, punching or head butting his “hard” stomach muscles, and children walking on his back.
He is survived by his wife, Arlene; children, Daniel (Marlys) Haase, Dawn Hagge, and David (Lindsay) Haase; grandchildren, John (Laura) Haase, Amy (Matt) Eldridge, Kristie (Jacob) Bierle, Hannah (Benjamin) Mulholland, Ethan Serfling, Audrey (Jason) Durfee, Emily Hagge, Abbey Hagge, William Haase, Alexander Haase, Katherine (Clifford) Syner, great-grandchildren: Addison & Macee Haase, Jesse & Dalton Eldridge, Karson, Kadence & Kolton Bierle, Lillian, Harold, Nicole & Joshua Mulholland and sister, Janice (Wayne) Vissers.
Vern was preceded in death by his daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Dave Serfling and toddler brother, LeRoy Haase.
Monetary donations will be designated to Ebenezer Cemetery.
