Sylvester “John” Charette was born on May 13, 1935 to Telesphore and Mary (Morin) Charette in Belcourt, North Dakota. John enlisted in the U.S. Army on August 15, 1959 and was honorably discharged on August 11, 1961. Following his service, he traveled the world doing many different jobs, such as roofing and driving truck during harvest.
John loved spending time with his children, grandchildren, and friends. He was a great dancer and always had a good time when listening to friends and family play fiddles and guitars. John also enjoyed singing and playing bingo with a good beer in his hand. He was a great joker and could always bring a good laugh to those around him.
John passed away on Monday, November 20, 2017 at Avera Majestic Bluffs in Yankton, South Dakota having attained the age of 82 years, 6 months, and 7 days.
He is survived and remembered by his children: John Sylvester LaVallie Charette of Belcourt, ND, Charlotte Charette of Yankton, SD, Renae (Jesus) Villagomez of Yankton, SD, and Gene Charette of Yankton, SD; granddaughters: Terrilynn LaVallie, Anna Decoteau Charette, Nakita Lavallie, Danielle Lavallie, Courtney Bushaw, Chelsey Charette, Bailey Groetken, Brooke Groetken, and Kailee Groetken; grandsons: John Curtis LaVallie, Dustin LaVallie, Leo Jr. Bercier, Cyle Bercier, Dylan Charette, Jacob Charette; brother Ray (Wanda) Charette of Belcourt, ND; and many great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and special god-children.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Margaret Azure, and brothers: Frank (Grace) Charette, Greg “Buckle” Charette, Steve Charette, and Clifford Charette.
