Robert William Born

July 14, 1933 — December 2, 2024

Yankton

Robert William Born, 91 of Yankton, died Monday, December 2, 2024 at Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton. Visitation for Bob will start at 9 a.m. on Saturday, December 7th at Trinity Lutheran Church at 403 Broadway Avenue in Yankton. His memorial service, officiated by both Pastor David Wildermuth and Pastor Jeff Otterman, begins at 10 a.m.

Bob was born to Elroy and Myrtle (Moreau) Born on July 14, 1933, in Minneapolis, MN. He went to high school until the age of 18, when he was able to enlist early into the US Navy. Bob served time in North Africa during the Korean War and was able to go on the 700th Honor Flight in 2019 with his best friend, Leon Somson.

Bob married Mary (Weber) Bormann on November 11, 1990, at the American Lutheran Church in Tripp, SD.

Bob enjoyed many hobbies during his lifetime, including riding his motorcycle until the age of 87, owning and working on his racecar, golfing, and being one of the original starting members of the Lake Area Pro Pheasants in Madison, SD. He worked at a variety of jobs in his lifetime, including being a tool and die maker, managing the Superwash car wash in Yankton for many years, and providing hotel maintenance at the Holiday Inn Express.

Spending time with his grandchildren was especially important to Bob. Bob really enjoyed taking Bubba (Tanner) and Queenie (Kylie) with him to the golf course and going to coffee with the guys. Bob made sure each grandchild received their specific breakfast preference whenever they stayed overnight, Kylie getting waffles and Tanner, dip eggs with toast.

It is important to note that Bob was an avid fan of McDonald’s in town. Every morning, at 6:00 a.m., for over two decades, Bob ate breakfast there. The McDonald’s team was very special to him. His order was always ready when he walked through the door. They went out of their way to decorate his booth on his 90th birthday. According to the manager, Bob was at a locked in “$1 breakfast that included a sausage and egg biscuit and a medium black coffee.” He never deviated from his breakfast choice, and he never figured out the McDonald’s app.

Bob is survived by his wife, Mary; his brother, Tom (Roxanne) Born of Crystal, MN; his son, Dan Born of Olivet, SD; his daughter, Mellanie (Jason) Larson of Blanchard, OK; his grandchildren, Tanner Larson of Oklahoma City and Kylie Larson of Brookings, SD and his Schnauzer, Marge “in charge.”

Bob is predeceased in death by his parents; his sister, Carol Melchesidick; his brother, “Butch” John Born, and his son, Dave Born.
