Robert “Bob” Stanley Vellek was born on Tuesday, January 2, 1934 to William and Bessie Vellek in Springfield, South Dakota. He attended Highland School in rural Springfield until the 8th grade. From 1955 to 1957, Bob was enlisted in the US Army in the Anti-Aircraft Artillery. Following his service, he worked as a miner at the Lead Homestead Mine for two years then left to farm at the family farm six miles north of Tyndall. On November 23, 1977, Bob was united in marriage to Maureen Hauck in Menno. Bob was always a farmer at heart, working the family farm for several years until his retirement in 2011. He raised and farrowed hogs as well as growing and harvesting corn and beans with his trusty John Deere 730 diesel tractor.
Bob was an honest man who tried to do what was right. He and Maureen greatly enjoyed spending Saturday nights uptown socializing with friends. He loved his family, and his fondness was obvious in the compassion and generosity he always showed towards his grandchildren.
Bob died on Wednesday, July 30, 2014 at the Menno-Olivet Care Center in Menno having attained the age of 80 years, 6 months, and 28 days.
He is remembered and survived by his wife of 36 years, Maureen Vellek of Menno; son Robert (Patricia) Hauck of NE; daughter Kathryn (Derek) Kothe of Sioux Falls; six grandchildren: Michael (Mandi), Christopher, Emily, Chelsea, Makala, and Allison.
He is preceded in death by his parents, William and Bessie Vellek, five brothers, and two sisters.
