Nellie Mabel Maruska

Nellie Mabel (Holm) Maruska of Scotland passed away on December 28, 2023, at LJM Hospital in Scotland, SD at the age of 81 years, 8 months and 6 days.

Visitation will be held 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Tuesday, January 2, 2024 at Goglin Funeral Home in Scotland.

A memorial service, officiated by Andy Bueber, will begin 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 3 at the funeral home.

Inurnment will be in Rosehill Cemetery, Scotland.

Nellie was the second child born to Leif and Ella (Stillman) Holm on April 22, 1942, in Scotland. She grew up in Scotland and graduated from Scotland High School in 1960. After graduation she moved to Yankton and worked as a bookkeeper for Fantle’s Department Store. 

She met the love of her life, Norman Maruska and they were married on September 21, 1963, and moved back to Scotland to create their life together with their four children.

Nellie worked for Gran’s and Gemar’s Market. She was a janitor at Scotland Elementary School for several years and finally the Main Hide Out, helping out in the kitchen.

She had several hobbies that included gardening, attending her grandchildren’s activities, word searches, and collecting loads of Christmas Decorations (garages full!).

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Zion Ladies Auxiliary, VFW Ladies Auxiliary, and the local Red Hatters. She was devoted to her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Family was everything to her.

Nellie is survived by her four children, Deborah (Marvin) Kruse, Deloris Maruska, Steve (Renee) Maruska and James (Tammy) Maruska, all of Scotland; 11 grandchildren, Matt, Carli, Kassidy, Jesse, Kalen, Derek (Danielle), Kalley, Kalob, Katelynn (Brady), Kourtney (Joe), and Peyton (Levi); 13 great grandchildren, Jax, Asher, Jase, Mariah, Quinten, Damien, Ethan, Kameryn, Adelynne, Walt, Philip, Emerson, and Kinzley; sisters, Pam (Vic) Settje, Evelyn (Dwayne) Werkmeister and Marilyn (Melvin) Gimbel as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and grand-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman in 2019; sisters, Carolyn Schmidt and Linda Holm; brothers, Melvin and George Holm and her parents.
