Michael Lee Vellek was born on Wednesday, October 17, 1962 in Tyndall, South Dakota to Louis and Nyla (Jezek) Vellek. Mike lived his life on the farm near Scotland and Tyndall and worked hard on the farm. He didn’t mind doing just about anything, as long as he was busy and working. He loved life on the farm and especially cherished his cats. Mike’s enjoyment in life centered around people and spending time with his family and friends. For that reason, he especially enjoyed Czech Days and Hot Dog Night each year. He was proud to have won the Polka Dance-Off at Czech Days two years ago. Mike spent many hours reading and thoroughly read the local phone books. He was widely known for having almost everyone’s phone number committed to memory. Other pastimes included singing karaoke and playing cards, and he also enjoyed watching game shows on television. After a courageous battle with throat cancer, Mike passed away on Wednesday, July 1, 2009 on the family farm near Scotland at the age of 46 years, 8 months and 14 days.
Grateful for having shared Mike’s life are his father, Louis Vellek of Scotland; two brothers: Marlowe Vellek and Kevin Vellek, both of Scotland; four sisters: Cathy Vellek of Huron, Marlene Vellek of Sioux Falls, Laurie Vellek of Scotland, and Marcia Skipper of Huron; and seven nieces and nephews: Cody Crockett of Tyndall, Sam Crockett of Sioux Falls, Jamie Fender of Sioux Falls, Isaiah Hoop of Sioux Falls, and Crosby Skipper, Nyla Skipper and Charity Skipper, all of Huron.
His mother, Nyla Vellek, and his paternal and maternal grandparents preceded him in death.
