Melvin Dean Vellek was born on March 7, 1927 to Charles and Tillie (Kucera) Vellek on the family farm in rural Bon Homme County, South Dakota. At the young age of 9, Melvin fell gravely ill. He suffered severe high fevers that ultimately led to a mental impairment. Melvin didn’t let his personal challenges affect his joy of life. He loved his time on the farm, gardening, and caring for animals. For a few years, he lived at Sunset Manor in Irene before making his home at the Good Samaritan Society of Tyndall in 1983.
Melvin enjoyed hours of riding on his bicycle and collecting aluminum cans on his travels. He also had a love for Bohemian music and frequently attended Groveland Park to enjoy the music. He was a quiet man, but he was always quick to greet a friendly face.
Melvin passed away on Thursday, June 27, 2019 at the Good Samaritan Society of Tyndall having attained the age of 92 years, 3 months, and 20 days.
He is survived and remembered by his sister Marcene (Larry) Kniffen of Tyndall; brother-in-law Darrell Hansen of Irene, SD; and nieces and nephews: Timothy Kniffen, Todd Kniffen, Teri Bretey, Tony Kniffen, Beth Davis, Brian Hansen, and Brendon Hansen.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Marlene Hansen.
This obituary was written by the Goglin Funeral Home on behalf of the Melvin Vellek family.
