Maxine Viola Fryda was born on October 21, 1927 to Hubert and Emma (Einrem) Lange in Perkins, South Dakota. During Maxine’s childhood her mother fell ill with TB, so she went and lived with her god-parents, John and Tillie Sell. Following her mother’s death, Maxine was formally adopted into the Sell family and gained 6 new siblings. At the end of her 6th grade, they moved to Burlington, Washington to be near family. She graduated high school in Concrete, Washington. Maxine enjoyed her days in high school and Washington picking strawberries, dancing, singing on the Bellingham Washington radio stations, and dating Jim. Maxine was united in marriage to Jim Fryda on January 29, 1947 at the Lutheran minister’s home in Vermillion. They farmed in the Avon area for several years and later moved to a Tyndall area farm. She took pride in their farm, where they raised cattle, sheep, and hogs as well as nurturing wheat, oat, milo, and corn crops. For a time, she served as a substitute teacher for the country schools and as a nurse’s aide at the Good Samaritan Society of Tyndall. In 1975, they moved off the farm and into Tyndall. She then worked as a nurse’s aide at St. Michael’s Hospital in Tyndall and then as a ward secretary for 20 years. Maxine served as an EMT with Tyndall Ambulance for 23 years.
Maxine passed away on Thursday, November 13, 2014 at the North Point Apartments in Tyndall at the age of 87 years and 23 days.
