Martha Magdalene Hoffmann Gimbel was born December 27, 1916 on a farm near Dallas, South Dakota, to Jacob and Katherina (Katie) (Mauch) Hoffmann. She was the 8th of 14 children. The family lived on a farm in the Dallas area.
Martha met John Gimbel at the Mission Festival in Scotland, SD in 1936. On January 1, 1939 they were married in a double wedding ceremony with Martha's brother, Arthur Hoffmann and John's sister, Anna Gimbel. To this union 6 children were born, 5 daughters and 1 son.
John and Martha were very active members of the Olivet UMC and Martha was a long standing member of the UMW and WCTU. Martha lived her Christian beliefs quietly, through her actions.
She was preceded in death by her husband: John; her parents: Jacob and Katherina Hoffmann; 5 brothers & sisters-in-law and 6 sisters & 7 brothers-in-law:
She is survived by a sister: Leona Lesley; a brother: Benjamin Hoffmann; a sister-in-law: Kay Hoffmann; hundreds of nieces, nephews, and cousins; along with numerous other relatives and friends.
Grateful for having shared her life are her son and daughter-in-law: Melvin & Marilyn Gimbel; 5 daughters and 4 sons-in-law: Violet & John Foley, Judy & Jerry Ritchison, Charlotte & Merlin Lehman, JoAnn & Ron Erickson, and Iva Laudermith;
She was blessed with 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and 6 great-great-grandchildren.
Martha Gimbel was called home by her angels on Wednesday, May 16, 2018, at Scotland Good Samaritan Home in Scotland, SD, at the age of 101 yrs, 4 ½ months. She will be greatly missed by all. May God bless her memory.
