Marie Frances O’Grady was born on Sunday, May 12, 1929 on the family farm near Tyndall, South Dakota. Her parents were William P. and Frances (Stulir) Varilek. When a hailstorm devastated their crops one summer, the family moved to be near her mother’s family in Endicott, New York. They lived there for three years, and it remained one of Marie’s favorite childhood memories. She received her high school education at the Tyndall and Tabor High Schools, and later attended Springfield Normal College. Marie married Robert Leo O’Grady on October 25, 1952 at St. Leo Catholic Church in Tyndall. In addition to being a homemaker and raising her two boys, she worked as a dental assistant to Dr. Isaak and Dr. Lindeman for many years. She also worked for the Selective Service Department at the courthouse in Tyndall and as a teacher’s aide during the time that they lived in Brookings. She was a member of St. Leo Catholic Church where she belonged to the choir and the Altar Society. Marie was a proud member of the Czech Heritage Preservation Society. She enjoyed reading, going to T.O.P.S. meetings, and visiting with her many friends. She enjoyed playing games and cards and was a member of the Delta Dozen Card Club. She lived for many years in the Lidi Apartments, until becoming a resident of the Springfield Assisted Living Center in May of 2007. Marie passed away on Saturday, May 9, 2009 at St. Michael’s Hospital in Tyndall at the age of 79 years, 11 months and 27 days.
Grateful to have shared Marie’s life are her two sons: Robert (Debbie) O’Grady of Watertown and John (Linda) O’Grady of Yankton; seven grandchildren: Nina (Jason) Lamb, and Steven, Megan, and Chase O’Grady, and Derek, Sean and Michael O’Grady; and a brother, William (Pat) Varilek of Tyndall.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert O’Grady, and her parents, William and Frances Varilek.
