Margaret Ackerman, age 99, passed away at Landmann-Jungman Memorial Hospital in Scotland, South Dakota August 28, 2017.
Margaret Kathryn Ackerman was born May 12, 1918 in Loveland, Colorado, the daughter of Reverend Ulrich and Elise (Herbsten) Zogg. She was the fifth oldest of ten children. She lived with her family in Tripp, SD and Lodi, California before moving to Scotland, SD where she graduated from Scotland High School in 1936. She attended St. Joseph's School of Nursing in Mitchell, SD where she received her degree as a Registered Nurse. Following graduation from nursing school, she moved to Idaho Falls, Idaho where she was employed at various hospitals in the area. There she met Reverend Harry Ackerman and on March 2, 1943 they were married in Preston, Idaho. Following World War II, they lived in Scotland where they adopted their first son, Michael, in 1948 at the age of 13 days. In 1949, their son, Rick, was born. The family then moved to Sheboygan, Wisconsin and later to Dubuque, Iowa. Margaret worked as a nurse at each of those communities. The family later moved to Miller, SD where Reverend Ackerman served as the pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church until his death in 1961.
Margaret moved to Scotland with her two young sons and returned to work as the first Registered Nurse employed by the Scotland Good Samaritan Center. She spent the last ten years of her nursing career at St. Michael's Hospital in Tyndall, SD. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Scotland since 1961. Margaret was a devoted mother, grandmother and friend and leaves behind a wealth of people who loved and were very close to her. She is remembered by many younger people in the community for the difference she made in their lives.
Survivors include two sons, Michael and wife, Liway, Ackerman of Ladson, South Carolina and Rick and wife, Claudia, Ackerman of Bellingham, Washington. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Michael, Jr, Christopher (Cheryl), Christine and Ryan (Jennifer) Ackerman; four great-grandchildren, Emily, Zoey, James and Samuel; her sister, Alma Golden of Grainfield, Kansas and her brother, Richard Zogg of Kennebuck, Maine; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Reverend Harry Ackerman, her father and mother, five brothers and two sisters.
