Lois Irene Rokusek was born on March 22, 1926 to C.R. and Bessie (Grim) Cary in Hutchinson County, rural Olivet, South Dakota. She graduated from Olivet High School in 1943, and attended Southern State Teacher’s College in Springfield, South Dakota earning her teacher’s certificate. She taught in rural schools in the Scotland-Olivet area. On April 7, 1947, she was united in marriage to William A. Rokusek. Together they made their home on a farm 6 miles north of Scotland. Lois worked alongside her husband on the farm until taking employment at the Blue Moon Tavern, Scotland and Haase’s Bar & Grill, Kaylor, South Dakota. She was a member of the Scotland Saddle Club, Rodeo Club, and Moose Lodge. She was also a part of the group who built and operated Dawson Creek Speedway in the 60’s. A lover of the outdoors, she spent her spare time with horses, hunting, fishing, and gardening.
In later years, she cared for her grandchildren which included playing baseball, football, chess, and attending their sporting events. In quieter times, she crocheted rugs and made her famous blue jean rugs which she often gave as presents.
Lois passed away on Saturday, July 14, 2018 at the Good Samaritan Society of Scotland having attained the age of 92 years, 3 months, and 22 days.
She is survived and remembered by her daughters: Vickie (Richard) Lemke of Inver Grove Heights, MN, and Patty (Dean) Mogck of Olivet, SD; grandchildren: Nicholas Lemke, Taylor Lemke, Dalton Mogck, Hannah Mogck, Cory Grimsrud, Nicole Bowen, and Kyle Mogck; sister Edna Brown of Brandon, SD; and nieces and nephews.
