Leonard Gottlieb Friederich, age 91, Tripp, SD died on September 14 at 1:00 p.m. at the Howard Good Samaritan Nursing Home.
Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Sunday, September 17 at Goglin Funeral Chapel in Tripp.
His funeral service will begin at 10:30 a.m. Monday, September 18 at First American Lutheran Church in Tripp. Burial will be in Grace Hill Cemetery with military honors.
He was born on July 10, 1932, at the Scotland Hospital to Gottlieb and Marie Friederich. Leonard was baptized and confirmed at the Denewitz Lutheran Church. Leonard attended rural grade school northwest of Kaylor, SD. He spent his early years working and living on the family farm. He became a member of the “Little Elmer’s Accordion Band” playing the tuba. The band played for many weddings and dances in South Dakota and North Dakota.
Leonard was drafted into the Army to serve in Korea from 1952-1955. On June 26, 1955 he married Peggy Colleen Felton. In 1956, with the aid of his Aunt Holda Knappe, Leonard entered the grocery business. He opened the “Friederich’s Super Savor.” In 1961, he built a new store on the east side on Main and named it the “Friederich IGA,” which he ran for 33 years.
In 1970, Leonard opened the “Dairy Haven” behind the store, which he ran for 9 years. In 1989, he started “Freddy Refrigeration.” He was the Maytag repairman for 18 years.
He also served the Tripp-Delmont School District, driving school bus for 25 years. He was a lifetime member of the Tripp American Legion, where he was chairman of Sports Days for 45 years. Leonard loved hunting, fishing, bowling, dancing, playing cards and 4th of July fireworks with his grandkids.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy of 68 years; son, Kevin and wife Phyllis; three grandchildren, David and wife Lydia of Germany, Megan of Ames, IA, and Westin of Frontenac, KS; one great-granddaughter, Vera of Germany; brother-in-law, Erwin Kost and sister-in-law, Elvera Friederich.
He was preceded in death his parents; five brothers, Arthur, Erwin, Raymond, Eugene and Melvin and six sisters, Olivia, Ida, Pauline, Loraine, Leona, Annetta.
