Lenora “Lornie” Ruth McCann was born on Nov 23, 1925, the 11th and youngest child born to Fred and Barbara (Bitterman) Lang near Tyndall, South Dakota. She graduated from Tyndall High School Class of 1943, during which time she met a nice, handsome classmate Gordon “Gordie” McCann. He joined the U.S. Navy following graduation, and Lornie worked as a telephone operator in Omaha and lived with her sister Lil. Lornie and Gordie were united in marriage on September 24, 1945 and moved unto the family farm on the banks of the Missouri River. Lornie was a hardworking farmwife and great cook, who together with Gordie raised their 4 children. Along with the farm work, she also worked at several area businesses, her favorite of which was Joyce’s Shoppe in Tyndall. She was a devoted parishioner of St. Leo Catholic Church and served in various capacities including the cemetery board, parish council, altar society, choir, and foresters. She was also a member of the Jolly Neighbors Extension Club, V.F.W. Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary, and Red Hat Ladies.
Lornie and Gordie enjoyed playing cards, bowling, and traveling. She won many bowling trophies with local bowling teams over the years, played in a bridge club, and was a have-no-mercy pinochle player. Family gatherings almost always included pinochle games and she played regularly with friends.
Gordie passed away in 2014 and Lornie moved to her apartment in Springfield and continued to live independently. She had a great sense of humor and always had a way of making you feel better with either a delicious meal, a funny story, or just kind words. She was blessed with many good friends and will be greatly missed.
Lornie passed away on Thursday, May 10, 2018 as the result of an automobile accident near Tyndall, South Dakota. She had attained the age of 92 years, 5 months, and 17 days.
She is dearly loved and remembered by her children: Greg (Barbara) McCann of Tabor, SD, Marie (Dennis) Duncan of Parker, SD, Jan (Bruce) Holtquist of Springfield, SD, and Kris (Clark) Kelley of Sioux Falls, SD; grandchildren: Holly McCann, Tricia Amen, Drew (Carrie) Duncan, Leilani (Kevin) Stewart, Melissa (Julius) Reynolds, Jeni Holtquist, Audra (Kevin) Fullerton, Julianne (Aaron) Wipf, and Sam Kelley; and 13 great-grandchildren.
