Joyce M. Schmoll, 88, passed away Tuesday evening, January 30, 2018 at the Tripp Good Samaritan Center surrounded by family.
Joyce M. Schmoll was born May 9, 1929 in Mitchell, SD to Theophil (Tape) and Bessie (Radford) Schumacher. She attended and graduated from Tripp School District. Joyce went on to Yankton College for a teaching certificate. She was proud to follow in her mother’s footsteps as an elementary teacher. She taught in the Wagner and Parkston School Districts. Joyce married Darold J. Schmoll on April 24, 1960. They were together for 43 years when Darold passed away. After marrying, Joyce dedicated her life to her family raising their three children and caring for her mother and mother-in-law as they aged. She was also active helping Darold with his plumbing, HVAC and electrical business as the bookkeeper and go-to-gal. Joyce’s many hobbies were quilting, crafting, decorating, cooking, and gardening.
Interacting with children was her passion, she stayed involved with them as a substitute teacher, a Sunday school teacher, a day care provider, and a dedicated, loving grandmother. Also she served in various capacities in the United Methodist Church and in the Jelkin-Harms American Legion Auxiliary. When Joyce’s mother entered Tripp’s Good Samaritan Nursing Home, Joyce worked as a dietary aid in order to stay close to her mother.
Grateful for having shared her life are her three children: Paula Lynch, Woonsocket, SD, James Schmoll, Uehling, NE, Carrie Gutierrez, Sioux Falls, SD; three grandchildren: Amanda (Dan) Neugebauer, Sioux Falls, SD, Kimberly Lofgren, Mitchell, SD, Kelsey (Dzenan) Berberovic, Sioux Falls, SD; as well as four great-grandchildren: Darby and Leah Neugebauer, Kennedy and Ethan Lofgren.
Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, parents and a grandson, Darin Zoss.
