Joseph James Hovorka, age 75, died Saturday, September 23, 2023 at St. Michael’s Hospital in Tyndall.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. (please note time) Friday, September 29 at Goglin Funeral Home in Tyndall. Visitation begins at 9 a.m. Interment will be at St. Leo Catholic Cemetery, Tyndall.
Joe was born December 25, 1947 to Anton and Hattie (Bouska) Hovorka at Yankton, SD. He graduated from Tyndall High School in 1966.
Joe was well liked and known for his strong work ethic. He loved God, would help anyone and always had time for a chat. Joe was a good athlete who made his way into the Tyndall High School Hall of Fame. He played competitive fast pitch softball into his 40s. He was driven and once he was set to do something, he was incredibly focused on the task. He served his country in the Vietnam War as an interrogator and continued to serve in the Navy, until being honorably discharged. For several years, Joe was owner and operator of Groveland Park, a dance hall just north of Tyndall. He completed his working carrier as a U.S. postal carrier. He was also a proud dad, coach and grandfather.
Joe is survived by his sons, Benjamin and Dustan Hovorka and Shannon and Clint DeBoer; 7 grandchildren, Trace, Carly, Taylen, Chase, Olivia, Wilder and Jett and sister, Judy Kornder.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Anton and Hattie Hovorka; sisters, Delores Kortan, Norma Hovorka, Nancy Stulc and Marjorie Sternhagen and brothers, Butch, John and Jim Hovorka.
