John Adolph Fillaus was born on April 15, 1950 to Edwin and Edna (Zeeb) Fillaus in Yankton, South Dakota. He attended Scotland High School and graduated in 1968. John earned a full ride scholarship to South Dakota State University due to his outstanding high school track records, some of which still stand today. On June 10, 1972, John was united in marriage to Victoria “Vickie” Frey in Tripp, South Dakota. Following college, he worked in the construction field with a focus in concrete and carpentry for Hjellming Construction in Sioux Falls. In 1979, John and Vickie moved to a farm in rural Scotland. For a time, he worked for Weber Grain and Feed in Lesterville until he began farming fulltime. In 2011, the couple retired from farming and began over-the-road trucking and enjoyed traveling from coast to coast. Throughout his life, John loved hunting, riding his motorcycle, and driving his semi-truck.
Due to health issues, John became a resident of Firesteel Healthcare Center in Mitchell. It is there that he passed away on Monday, August 21, 2017 surrounded by his family and having attained the age of 67 years, 3 months, and 6 days.
He is survived and remembered by his wife of 45 years, Vickie Fillaus of Scotland; children: Michael Fillaus of Mitchell, Mark (Heather) Fillaus of Scotland, and Kristi (fiancée Steve Atkins) Fillaus of Worthing; grandchildren: Gracie, Isabella, and Wyatt; and brothers: Jim (Kay) Fillaus of Lesterville and Frank (Mary) Fillaus of Crofton, NE. He was preceded in death by his parents.
