Jean Ann (Breen) Olson was born on December 2, 1954 to Lawrence M. and Viola L. (Wentz) Breen in Rapid City, South Dakota. She was baptized at Calvary Lutheran Church with Gustav and Hilda Knutson as her Godparents and confirmed at Lake Preston Lutheran Church. She attended Canyon Lake Elementary School in Rapid City. After leaving Rapid City, she attended schools in Elk Horn, Iowa, Fremont, Nebraska, Dickinson, North Dakota and graduated from Lake Preston High School. She attended Southeast VoTech in Sioux Falls, South Dakota where she graduated as an LPN. She worked 10 years in South Dakota, Montana and Missouri before completing her Associate Degree in Nursing at USD in Vermillion. She worked at Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, South Dakota for several years, then at the State Hospital for 7 years. In 1987, she moved to California where she worked at Ventura General Hospital for 4 years before returning to South Dakota to bring her first grandchild into this world. She stayed in South Dakota 1½ years before she returned to California and became Director of Nursing for a 75-bed long-term care facility, 3-story assisted living facility and 90 independent cottages. Following this, she returned to bedside nursing at the Ventura County Medical Center in the Psychiatric Unit. For most of her career, she worked the night shift and preferred it that way. She was a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary.
She was married in January of 1971 to Marvin Olson.
They divorced in 1972. Their daughter, Syerenna, was born on Friday, April 13, 1972.
Jean is survived by her mother, Viola (Wentz-Breen) Bauder in Scotland, South Dakota; brother Robert Breen (daughter Julie and son Christopher) in Tempe, Arizona; best friend and life-long companion, Don Jackson in Ventura, California; daughter Syerenna (Olson) Van Bruggen (husband James, S.O. Lacy, children Nicholas, Stefanie, Robert and Shawn) in Soldotna, Alaska; stepsister Pauline Finck (husband LeRoy [deceased]) in Tripp, South Dakota; stepbrother Duane Bauder (wife Shari) in Yankton, South Dakota, and stepbrother Marvin Bauder (wife Diane) of Tyndall, South Dakota.
