James R. Fowkes was born on March 29, 1925 to Ed and Nora (Lust) Fowkes in Beatrice, Nebraska. He graduated from Scotland High School and went on to attend Purdue University and later graduated from Southern State Teachers College in Springfield. James proudly served his country during World War II in the Army Air Corp, restocking bombs on bomber planes. He was married to Myrna Muhmel in Scotland in 1951.
James worked various occupations in his life. He retired in 1993 and was most recently a librarian for Sioux City Schools. He also taught social studies at North Jr. and West Jr. High Schools in Sioux City. During the summers, he worked for Farmer's Mutual as a crop hail adjuster. He also owned and operated Jim’s Standard Service and spent time as a farmer, raising fox and mink. James was a volunteer fire fighter and was a past Commander of the Paul Grosshuesch VFW Post #2966 of Scotland. James enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, bowling, reading and spending time with his family. He passed away on Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at a hospital in Sioux City.
James is survived by his wife, Myrna Fowkes of Sioux City: a son, James S. (Erin) Fowkes of Mitchell; a daughter, Heidi (Jeff) Deignan of Sioux City; four grandchildren: Amber and Whitney Fowkes and Caitlyn and Conor Deignan; and two nephews: Robert and Douglas Fowkes. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister and a brother, Donald Fowkes.
