Iva’s Family
Iva B. Hovden was born on Tuesday, December 2, 1930 to Lawrence and Rena (Jessen) Tanderup in Beresford, South Dakota. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in which she believed her entire life. Following her graduation from Irene High School, Iva attended Paul’s Beauty School in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She worked as a beautician in Minneapolis and Yankton. On November 11, 1956, Iva was united in marriage to Melvin Hovden and together they made their home in the Mission Hill area. She also worked at Gurney’s and the Yankton Care Center. Iva was a member of Vangen Lutheran Church in Mission Hill where she served as a Sunday school teacher and on the church council.
Iva took special care in maintaining her home at Valley View, diligently painting, mowing, and gardening the flowers she loved so much. She was also known for her hospitality and opening her home to all her friends and neighbors. Every Sunday afternoon, Iva would sit down and hand-write cards to her family, showing her caring through frequent correspondence.
Iva passed away on Thursday, August 27, 2015 at Sunset Manor in Irene having attained the age of 84 years, 8 months, and 25 days.
She is survived and remembered by her children: Lianne (Yoni) Suarez of Belmond, IA, Karen (Bruce) Avilla of Fayetteville, TN, and David (Diane) Hovden of Mission Hill; grandchildren: Sergio Suarez, Gustavo Suarez, Carlene (Keifer) Datema, Andrea Avilla, Geneva Avilla, Mary Ann Avilla, Bethany Avilla, and Julie Avilla; great-grandchild Kip Datema; and brother Erland Tanderup of San Antonio, TX.
