Ione Norma Nill was born on July 31, 1924 to Christian & Mary (Herman) Nill on the family farm southeast of Kulm, North Dakota. She attended rural school through the eighth grade. For a time, she worked in the Kulm area until moving to Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1943. During this time, Ione worked in the war industry at Honeywell, making bombing and artillery sights.
On January 29, 1944, she was united in marriage to Sgt. Gilbert Schaefer of Tripp, SD who was serving at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin. The couple returned to Tripp in 1945. Gilbert worked at the local service station, which they eventually bought and operated for over 40 years. Ione helped Gilbert run the business by managing the bookkeeping.
Ione was a member of Frieden's Reformed Church and the American Legion Auxiliary. She served in the Frieden’s Womens’ Guild, as a 4-H Leader, and Cub Scout Leader. She enjoyed the many fishing and camping trips they shared with friends and their travels on numerous bus tours. Yet she most enjoyed all the visits from her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, relatives, and friends.
In 2002, Ione entered the Good Samaritan Society of Tripp which became her home until her death on Saturday, January 20, 2018 having attained the age of 93 years, 11 months, and 20 days.
Grateful for having shared Ione’s life are her two children: Sharon Odegaard of Lake Preston, SD and Dennis (Phyllis) Schaefer of Platte, SD; seven grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren: Shane (Rebecca) Odegaard and daughters, Ashley, Danielle, Callie and Emsley; Jadd (Wendy) Odegaard and sons Garret and Chance, Dustin and Devin Reuer; Shaun (Kristi) Odegaard and children Brandy, Taren and Kiera; Justin (Jenna) Odegaard and sons Waylin and Daxtin; Brenden (Suzy) Schaefer and children Lily and Gilbert; Tanielle (Joel) Sylvester and children Addison and Dawson; KyLee (Nicolas) Shoemaker and daughter Natalie; brother-in-law LaVern (Arlene) Schaefer; and many nieces, nephews, relatives, friends, and her wonderful, caring, compassionate family at the Good Samaritan Society.
She was preceded in death by her husband Gilbert, parents, two sisters: Ruth Janke and Anita (Ann) Anderson, two brothers: Roy and Edgar Nill, son-in-law Wayne Odegaard, and grandson Josh Odegaard.
