Herman Kaul was born on August 30, 1917 to Christian and Christina (Hieb) Kaul, Jr. on the family homestead 8 miles north of Tyndall that was established in 1887. On March 18, 1943, he was united in marriage to Fae Marie Mattis at Danzig Baptist Church in rural Avon.
Following his retirement from farming and move to Tyndall in 1980, he continued to enjoy farming by helping many local farmers. For a time, he also worked by spraying weeds for the Bon Homme county weed board. He enjoyed nurturing a garden and solving jigsaw puzzles.
For 8 months, Herman lived at the assisted living in Springfield until he needed more assistance and became a resident at the Good Samaritan Society of Scotland. It is there that he passed away on Wednesday, May 17, 2017 having attained the age of 99 years, 8 months, and 17 days.
He is survived and remembered by his children: Barb (Ralph) Bauder of Scotland, SD, Terry (Jonna) Kaul of Springfield, and Diane (Dave) Hohn of Sioux Falls; 7 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded into death by his wife in 2008, parents, and 10 siblings: Julius Kaul, Regina Weisser, infant Theodore Kaul, Ben Kaul, Edna Bauder, Ruben Kaul, infant August Kaul, Esther Weisser, Clara Vilhauer, and Ruth Breitkreutz.
