Hazel Laverne (Halsey) Boese was born on October 21, 1929 to W.P. “Platt” and Lorna (Guptil) Halsey in Springfield, South Dakota. She was raised in the Springfield area. She attended rural grade school and graduated from Springfield High School. She earned her teacher’s certificate at Southern State Teachers College in Springfield and went on to teach for 5 years at rural grade schools.
On December 17, 1950, Hazel was united in marriage to Merlin Boese with 3 children being born to this union: Donna, Mark, and Randy. The couple farmed briefly near Springfield before moving to their farm south of Avon, SD. They later moved to the Halsey Farm near Springfield then spent 11 years in Custer, SD before retiring to their present home in Tyndall, SD.
Hazel passed away on Wednesday, March 27, 2019 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, South Dakota having attained the age of 89 years, 5 months, and 6 days.
Surviving Hazel are her loving husband of68 years, Merlin Boese; daughter Donna Quigley; sons: Mark (Angeline) Boese and Randy (Kelly) Boese; grandchildren: Kelley Friedland, Shawn Quigley, Susie Quigley, Whitney Sawyer, Dakota Sawyer, Kassie Boese, Baylee Boese, Jay Boese, Joel Boese, and Alpha Boese; great-grandchildren: Addie, Arden, Beckett, Addaline, Chloe, and Ethan; brother Ken (Erin) Halsey; and sister-in-law Mary Halsey.
Preceding Hazel in death were her parents, brothers Walter (Delores) Halsey and Ronald Halsey, and sister Faye (Kelly) Finck.
A loving wife, mother, grandmother, and sister, Hazel will be sorely missed by those who knew her well.
