Harvey Wormsbecher was born on September 22, 1933 to Emanuel and Amelia (Buchholz) Wormsbecher at their home in Avon, South Dakota. As a child, he attended Vesper country school. Harvey entered the U.S. Army on February 28, 1956 at Camp Chaffee. He completed his basic training at Ft. Leonardwood and Ft. Dix. He went on to receive engineer training and attended forman school. On September 24, 1956, Harvey boarded the W.H. Thomas and set sail to and served in Spain, Naples, Italy, Leghorn, Italy, and Vicenza, Italy. On February 13, 1958, Harvey was honorably discharged from the Army and returned home.
On October 2, 1960, Harvey was united in marriage to Betty Weisser at Bethany Reformed Church in Delmont, South Dakota. Together they made their home on a farm in rural Tripp where they farmed for over 36 years. They raised cattle, pigs, chickens, and worked on many other projects as well. In 1998, they retired from farming and moved into Tripp.
Harvey’s biggest interest for over 55 years was playing his accordion. He played solo as well as in many bands. He enjoyed performing at nursing homes, anniversaries, birthdays, and many other parties.
Harvey passed away on Thursday, October 6, 2017 at the Good Samaritan Society of Tripp having attained the age of 84 years and 14 days.
He is survived and remembered by his wife of 57 years, Betty Wormsbecher of Tripp, SD and many nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings: Clarence Wormsbecher, Lillian Richter, Esther Wudel, Ruth Ded, Hulda Wormsbecher, Julia Perman, Ella Roth, Elmer Wormsbecher, and Lorine Cihak.
