Gilbert Meyer, 79, Parkston, formerly of Tripp, died September 19th at Avera St. Benedict Hospital, Parkston. He was born December 6, 1927 on the family farm northeast of Tripp to Adam A and Anna (Vilhauer) Meyer. He weighed just two pounds at birth. He was baptized and confirmed at the rural Friedensfeld Congregational Church near Parkston. He learned German at an early age since all his Sunday School lessons were taught in German. He attended the local rural grade school, Baltzer District #43, in Hutchinson County and graduated from Tripp High School in 1945. Following high school he worked on the family farm and operated a trucking service transporting livestock to the Sioux Falls and Sioux City Stockyards. He was drafted and served his country as a member of the Fifth Army Division during the Korean Conflict from 1950-1952 where he was an Engineer/Surveyor. Following his deployment, he was employed at the Tripp Creamery as a route driver. On October 11, 1953, he married Betty Lou Fischer. They farmed together northeast of Tripp until 2006 when they relocated to Parkston. He was a member of the Frieden’s Reformed Church, Frieden’s Foundation Board, a 12-year member of the Turner Hutchinson Rural Electric Board of Directors and several livestock industry boards and other community organizations. He found great joy attending his children’s and grandchildren’s activities and especially loved attending 4-H livestock shows. His favorite treats were chocolate popcorn and homemade ice cream.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Betty Lou and their four children: Deborah Pearson and her husband, Darry, Racine, Wisconsin; David and his wife, Nancy, Elkhorn, Nebraska; Jacqueline Wentworth and her husband Jim, Stickney, South Dakota; and James and his wife, Lisa, Lake Barrington, Illinois. Seven grandchildren: Paige Pearson, Green Bay, Wisconsin; Stacy Meyer, Dallas, Texas; Cody Meyer, Lubbock, Texas; Christopher Meyer, Elkhorn, Nebraska; Anne and Tess Wentworth, Stickney, South Dakota; and Kendall Meyer, Lake Barrington, Illinois.
Gilbert’s other surviving special relatives include his sisters-in-law, they include Hattie Schneider, Scotland, South Dakota; Delores Cottrell, Davis, California; Violet Heinz, Washington, Illinois; Paulette Fischer, Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Ida Brady and her husband, William, Mitchell, South Dakota; and a brother-in-law LE. Fischer and his wife, Maydean, Mitchell, South Dakota.
Because Gilbert was an only child, his many Meyer and Vilhauer cousins were a special part of his life.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
