George Nicholas Holm was born May 27, 1940 to Leif Nicholas and Ella Mabel (Stillman) Holm. He was raised on a farm outside of Scotland until they moved into what became the family home in town during his second grade year. George attended school until the eighth grade. He eventually purchased the house next door into which he and his brother, Melvin, moved into. In April of 2018, George relocated into a different home on Elgin Street. He enjoyed being in his new home, sitting on the front porch and front step watching and visiting with the people as they passed by.
During George’s life, he did many things. He worked for Bakers Produce, Clarence Zweifel Trucking, Farmland Hog Barn, hauling bales and helping various farmers, moving heavy furniture (people were always calling for George and Melvin to move things), and helping Larry Auch Plumbing by doing errands.
George enjoyed spending time at Menno Sale Barn and cattle auctions, driving around town in his van, trying to be helpful to Larry, barbecues, and his birthday parties at Jim and Tammy’s with his family and friends. He also especially enjoyed his great nephews: Kalen Maruska, Makalob Maruska, Lyken Settje, and Ryatt Settje. We would often find George anywhere those boys were, watching them at football, baseball, swimming, or playing in Pam’s yard. He would wait for Lyken with a bag of popcorn and suckers after daycare. He would call McKalen for Kalob, Ryken for Lyken, and Lyatt for Ryatt. We would chuckle and just let it go because we knew that George adored those boys.
George passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 24, 2019 at his residence in Scotland at the age of 78 years, 8 months, and 28 days.
Survivors include his sisters: Nellie (Norman) Maruska, Marilyn (Melvin) Gimbel, Evelyn (Dwayne) Werkmeister, and Pamela (Vic) Settje. He is also remembered by his brother-in-law, Melvin Schmidt; nieces and nephews: Deb (Marvin) Kruse and family, Deloris Maruska, Steve (Renee) Maruska and family, Jim (Tammy) Maruska and family, Kathy (James) Duke and family, Robert (Jessica) Gimbel, Carrie (David) Karki, Sherry (Zeth) Gaskins and family, Victor (Fancy) Settje and family, Fred Settje, John Settje, Nickolas Settje (Carrie Hinze) and family; and many cousins and friends.
