Frieda Barbara Thum was born September 10, 1925 near Lesterville, SD to Wilhelm and Katherina (Neth) Kost. She was baptized on November 25, 1925 at Peterburg Congregational Church by Rev. Hugo Baumann and confirmed June 23, 1940 in Scotland, SD by Rev. Carl Green. She attended Rockland Country School through the eighth grade. Freida was united in marriage to Elmer John Thum on December 16, 1945 at Petersburg Congregational Church rural Lesterville, SD. They farmed near Scotland, SD until 1969, then moved to Mitchell, SD. She did housework for several families for 17 years. In 1986 they moved back to Scotland, SD and joined the U.C.C. Church. She loved her family. She enjoyed her grand and great grandchildren when they would come to stay. She enjoyed embroidery work, tieing quilts, working with flowers, and putting puzzles together.
She passed away Monday, April 2, 2018 at The Good Samaritan Society in Scotland, SD at the age of 92.
Grateful for having shared Frieda's life are her daughter Carol (Robert) Reimann of Olivet, SD; son LeRoy Thum of Rapid City, SD; six grandchildren: Alisa (Doug) Bierle of Ethan, SD, Theresia (Joel) Neuman of Scotland, SD, Bobbi Jo Schlim (Brad Kiefer) Sioux Falls, SD, Greg (Athena) Thum, and Candice (Josh) Nuernberger, all of Benson, AZ, and Daniel (Theresa) Thum, North Aurora, IL; fifteen great-grandchildren: Colton (Ashley) Bierle, Courtney Bierle, Trey and Taber Neuman, Steve, Cory and Crystal Thum, Jeremy and Adrian Nuernberger, Isabelle, Logan, Serafina, and Micah Thum; and several nieces and nephews.
Frieda was preceded in death by her parents, husband Elmer, a grandson Benjamin Thum in infancy, two sisters Anna (Edmund) Weltz and Lorraine (Herbert) Mettler, six brothers: William (Betty), John (Mabel), Ted (Helen), Otto, Richard (Marilyn) and Otto in infancy, and a brother and sister in law Raymond and Violet Thum.
