Faye Marjorie Nichols was born January 4, 1922 to William Earl and Esther Marie (Schroeder) Nichols and passed away September 17, 2017. She attended country school until 5th grade when the family moved closer to town (Fairmont, NE) so her and her brothers could attend school in town. She was active in 4H, Choir, playing basketball, and enjoyed her pony. She had a part in the Senior Class Play. After graduation from Fairmont High School, the family moved to Atlantic, Iowa where she went to work for the Farm Bureau Office and spent time working in the Auditor’s Office and Superintendent of Schools. One of her duties was to construct a map of the county with all resident locations, children in the homes, and their ages for the Farm Bureau Office.
She loved to roller skate and spent a lot of evenings at the roller rink which is where she met the love of her life, Gilbert Wallace Scheef. They were married November 26, 1942. He joined the US Army late December in 1942 and was shipped to Hawaii during World War II.
Their first daughter, Judith Frances, was born in Atlantic, Iowa in August of 1943 and was 2 ½ years old before she saw her father. In late December of 1945, Gilbert came home from the war and in 1946 they moved to Fayetteville, Arkansas. They lived in Arkansas for 5 years and then moved to Sioux City, Iowa where Gilbert continued his career as a photographer for Genelli Studios. The second daughter, Sandra Louise, was born in May 1953. Faye also worked for Genelli’s doing tinting of portraits. In September of 1961, their son Kallon Gilbert was born. While living in Sioux City, they got started square dancing and enjoyed that until Gilbert’s health failed.
In 1966, they moved to St. Joseph, Missouri where they stayed for a year and then moved to Lincoln, Nebraska where he worked for National School Studios. In 1968, they moved to Fremont, Nebraska where he managed Prestige Portraits and then opened their own photography studio in the basement of their home in Fremont.
In 1976, the moved to an acreage in Craig, Nebraska where they raised Arabian horses, chickens, turkeys, cats, dogs, pigeons, peacocks, and finally got involved showing rabbits. Gilbert was instrumental in getting the Polish Rabbit breed started in Nebraska and Faye took over the Polish Rabbits and showed them along with her Dutch and Satin rabbits.
Faye was very active as a Girl Scout leader in Sioux City, Iowa and a 4H leader in Fremont, Nebraska. She was an active member of the Burt County Association for Family Community and Education, holding the office of secretary. She was an authority when anyone needed any information regarding showing rabbits and gave demonstrations and talks all over the area. She served as judge for several 4H rabbit shows and sold quality show rabbits to 4H kids all over the East Central Nebraska area.
She thoroughly enjoyed her rabbits until the time of her 1st stroke in January 2010. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert Wallace, her parents Esther and William, both her brothers Frances and Everett, and sister-in-law Florence.
She is survived by her three children: Judith (Marvin) Peacock of Tyndall, SD; Sandra (Vaughn) Canady of Wakonda, SD; and Kallon Gilbert of Fremont, NE; and grandsons Kyle Gilbert of Omaha, NE and Kurt William of Fremont, NE.
