Evelyn was born on November 9, 1926 to Herman and Katherina (Hoff) Raabe in Tyndall, South Dakota. She attended country school through the eighth grade. On November 16, 1944, she was united in marriage to Wilbert Rokusek. For a time they farmed north of Yankton until moving to Tyndall where they farmed for several years. Together they were blessed with four sons and three daughters.
Following Wilbert’s untimely death on February 1, 1967, Evelyn moved her family into town. To support her young family, Evelyn worked various jobs through the years. She loved children, and for many years besides raising her own children she also caringly babysat over 25 children from the area. She also sewed and did laundry for many people in the community. For decades she worked as a housekeeper at the Good Samaritan Society of Tyndall and was devoted to never missing work. Evelyn never felt burdened or annoyed by work, but rather truly enjoyed and sought out ways to be helpful and useful to the ones around her. Evelyn began to slow down and retire in her early 80s. Throughout her life, she was truly a dedicated, hard worker.
Evelyn loved visiting and reminiscing about years ago with her friends and family. She looked forward to spending time with her family, especially when her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were able to visit. She also enjoyed playing cards and doing word search puzzles. Evelyn was an active member of St. John Lutheran Church, Tyndall.
On Saturday, January 21, 2017, Evelyn fell asleep in Jesus at St. Michael’s Hospital Avera in Tyndall having attained the age of 90 years, 2 months, and 12 days.
She is survived by her sons: Larry (Linda) Rokusek of Minneapolis, MN, Wilmer Rokusek of Sioux Falls, and Mike (Lisa) Rokusek of Tyndall; daughters: Sharon Hetzel of Tyndall and Kay (Wayne) Kniffen of Springfield, SD; eleven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded into Heaven by her husband, parents, four brothers, three sisters, infant son Curtis, and daughter Diane.
To God be the Glory.
