Douglas Lee Orth was born on November 13, 1932 to John A. and Emma (Ackerman) Orth in rural Lesterville, South Dakota. He attended Odessa #42 country school through the 8th grade and went on to graduate from Scotland High School in 1950. Following his graduation, he immediately began farming and continued the occupation for several decades before retiring in the 1990s. For several years, he also participated as a board member for the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS). On October 4, 1959, Doug was united in marriage to Shirley Gall in Lesterville and two children were born to this union, Lee and Kay.
Doug was a member of the United Church of Christ in Scotland from the time of his infant baptism at Petersburg Congregational Church near Lesterville to the 1965 congregational merger and throughout his adult life. He faithfully served the church as the high school class Sunday school teacher, as a trustee, and singing in the choir and men’s quartet.
His favorite pastimes were watching his grandchildren play ball and a good game of pinochle with his card buddies. Doug was also a longtime member of the Lesterville Community Club. He will always be remembered as a hardworking farmer and a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
Following a long battle with Leukemia and Parkinson’s Disease, Doug fell asleep in Jesus on Saturday, June 3, 2017 at Avera Majestic Bluffs Hospice in Yankton, South Dakota having attained the age of 84 years, 6 months, and 21 days.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Shirley Orth of Scotland; son Lee (Mary) Orth of Yankton; daughter Kay (Kelly) Herrboldt of Lesterville; grandchildren: Zachary Orth, Riley (Jami) Hall, Tori Herrboldt, and Trent Herrboldt; great-grandchildren: Dillon, Abriella, and Marshall Hall.
He was preceded into Heaven by his parents, sister Corine Orth, and brother-in-law Dennis Gall.
