Delray Herr was born on Monday, May 9, 1932 to Helmuth H. and Viola Olivia (Hoff) Herr on the family farm four miles north of Ree Heights, South Dakota. He attended grade school until the 8th grade at which time he began to farm alongside his father. Delray enlisted in the Army and then the National Guard. Delray made his home on a farm in the Tripp area. For the majority of his life, Delray was a farmer. In his early years, he also did contract farm work until he focused primarily on his crop farming. He retired from farming in 1993.
Delray was a quiet and jovial man who always had a sense of humor, even in the midst of difficulties. He especially enjoyed fishing, playing cards and marbles with family and friends and playing blackjack at Fort Randall Casino. He also enjoyed traveling and visiting with family. He was a lifetime member of Frieden’s Reformed Church, Tripp and was a member of the Church Council and Foundation Committee. He also served on the Farmer’s Elevator Board of Directors.
Delray passed away on Thursday, October 25, 2018 at Good Samaritan Center in Wagner, South Dakota having attained the age of 86 years, 5 months, and 16 days.
He is survived and remembered by his sister Marcella Breitkreutz; and special friend Marvin Ebright; sister-in-law Deloris Herr; nephews: Mark L. (Joan) Herr, Scot A. Herr, and Glen R. (Renee) Herr; great niece Trisha Herr, aunt Edna Heisinger and several cousins and close friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents Helmuth H. and Viola Olivia (Hoff) Herr, brother LeRoy Herr, and brother-in-law Marvin Breitkreutz.
