Darlis Kay Fischer was born on Sunday, October 25, 1964 at Huron Regional Medical Center in Huron, South Dakota to Harley and Karen (Smith) Crandall. She attended Jefferson Elementary School and graduated from Huron High School in 1982. When she was a teenager, she worked as a beekeeper. In her young adult years, she worked as a server at the Barn Restaurant in Huron and as a CNA at the Violet Tschetter Memorial Home, also in Huron. On September 28, 1987, Darlis married Lyle John Fischer and a daughter, Rebecca Fischer, was born to this union. Lyle passed away in a motorcycle accident in the fall of 1989. Darlis met Ron Gilbert in March of 1994 and spent the rest of her life with him. In 1999, she gave birth to stillborn twin boys. In 2002, she began working at Prairie Home in Yankton and in 2004 she began working at Pine Lanes Assisted Living in Yankton. At both facilities, she worked as a Med Aide. On February 17, 2005, she and Ron welcomed Nicole Gilbert to the family. When Nicole turned two years old, Darlis decided to stay home to care for her. Darlis liked to go to the movies, go bowling, and spend time with her family and friends. She passed away after her battle with cancer on Thursday, August 11, 2011 at St. Michael’s Hospital Avera in Tyndall, having attained the age of 46 years, 9 months, and 16 days.
Darlis will be remembered by her significant other, Ron Gilbert; her two daughters, Nicole Gilbert and Rebecca (Jacob) Sipple; one step-granddaughter, Sophie Kilch; her parents, Karen (Robert) Anderson and Harley (Ruby) Crandall; two brothers, David Crandall and Curtis Crandall; honorary sisters-in-law, Audra Conners and Twila Gilbert; three nephews, Dylan Crandall, Cole Florey and Alex Crandall; two nieces, Crystal Young and Christina Crandall; her mother-in-law, Verla Fischer; honorary mother- and father-in-law, Carol and Gary Gilbert; and many friends and relatives.
In addition to all of her grandparents, Darlis was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle Fischer; two twin sons, Angelo Lee Gilbert and Lee Angelo Gilbert; father-in-law Ancel Fischer; three uncles, Daryl Crandall, Dale Wipf and Ray Schroeder; one aunt, Bonnie Wipf; one cousin, Troy Crandall; and honorary mother-in-law, Irene Gilbert-Gregg.
