Charlotte Hawley was born on Monday, March 3, 1913 in Tripp, South Dakota to Ernest and Mary (Dangel) Kotas.  She graduated from Tripp High School and earned her teaching certificate from General Beadle State College. Charlotte was united in marriage to Ivyn Hawley on May 27, 1943 at Mt. Vernon, South Dakota. Charlotte spent her life caring for children in many capacities. She taught country school for over 25 years, receiving awards from the State of South Dakota for her dedication to the education profession and also from the Tripp-Delmont School District. Charlotte and Ivyn were foster parents and welcomed numerous children into their home over the years. In addition, Charlotte cared for many other area children. She also spent many years as an adult literacy tutor. While she and Ivyn lived on the farm, she was an active partner, milking cows for over 60 years and was recognized for 50 years of farming at the South Dakota State Fair. Charlotte touched many lives through her generosity, both in the teaching and farming professions, and her chocolate chip cookies and apple pies were always favorite treats. She became a resident of the Good Samaritan Society of Tripp in January of 2007, and it is there that she passed away on Sunday, December 12, 2010, having attained the age of 97 years, 9 months and 9 days.
Charlotte is survived by many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Ernest and Mary Kotas, Charlotte is preceded in death by her husband, Ivyn Hawley, three brothers: John Kotas, William Kotas and Ralph Kotas, and a sister, Loretta (Kotas) Walz.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to Tripp-Delmont High School toward the Charlotte Hawley Scholarship Fund for future teachers.
