Blanche Sybil Colgan was born on April 29, 1923 to Horace Kendra and Alice Maude (Lovett) Young at Hemel Hempstead, England. She attended the Bury Hill School to the age of 14 when she went to work at the Apply Mill making books for seven years.
On Dec. 18, 1943, Sybil was united in marriage to Gilfred G. Colgan AAF at St. Johns Parish Church in Boxmoor, Hertfordshire, England.
Sybil and baby Ray departed for America on the warship Hermitage on May 5, 1945 and arrived at Boston, MA on May 23, 1945. She and Ray traveled by train to Chicago, IL where they boarded the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul train to Yankton and then a bus from Yankton to Tyndall where she was met by Gilfred’s parents. Gilfred returned to Tyndall after WWII ended. Sybil and Gil began their life together and farmed by Tyndall.
Sybil became a naturalized citizen on Aug. 4, 1959. She was a great Mom and Grandma to all the kids. She enjoyed crocheting, bowling, and was a member of Tops Club.
Sybil passed away on Friday, November 10, 2017 at Avera Majestic Bluffs Nursing Home in Yankton at the age of 94 years, 6 months, and 12 days.
She is loved and remembered by her five children: Ray (Horvolene), Robert (Ann), Sharon (Mike) Giedd, Valerie (Rick) Hass, and Judy (Larry) Rickard; 14 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great-grandchildren; and one sister.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, three grandsons, five brothers, and four sisters.
