Arlene Mae Schmidt was born on May 30, 1930 to John And Hattie Breitkreutz on the family farm. She was the third of three children, joining her sister Helen and brother Marvin. Arlene was baptized and confirmed at Emmaus Lutheran Church. She attended Aden country school and graduated from Tripp High School in 1948. After graduation, she worked for Eastman Drugstore for several years.
On March 16, 1952, she was united in marriage to Donald Schmidt. They lived in Tripp for most of their lives raising their four children: Janet, Mary, Bob, and David. In 1968 she started working at the Good Samaritan Society Tripp as a nurse's aide and then as the restorative aide. She retired on September 6, 1998 after 30 years. She enjoyed reading, puzzles, gardening, canning, traveling, and spending time with family. She was happiest baking cookies and caramel rolls for her grandchildren. Holidays were important to her, and she always wanted all of her family there.
She is survived by Janet(Mike) King of Sioux City, grandson James of Sioux City; Mary Schmidt of Sioux Falls; Bob Schmidt of Brookings; and David Schmidt of Lake Preston, granddaughter Megan Schmidt of Sioux Falls and grandson John Schmidt of Vermillion. She is also survived by brother-in-law James (Lorry) Schmidt of Scotland and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Don; her parents; sister Helen and brother-in-law Ralph Kotas; brother Marvin and sister-in-law Marcella Breitkreutz.
